WATCH, LEARN & PLAY
Polo in Sotogrande: understand the clubs, plan a spectator visit and find the right route into the sport.
A match can make a memorable part of a Sotogrande visit, but polo is organised around specific grounds, fixtures and access arrangements. Confirm the event and location before you set out; a club address is not confirmation that a public match is taking place.

Ask about instruction, facilities or events specifically; general public access is not assumed.
Plan a day at the polo
Ask the organiser for the match date, start time, ground name and spectator entrance. Confirm whether admission, parking or hospitality requires a ticket. A restaurant reservation or VIP package may be separate from general match access.
Allow time to reach the actual ground and follow the stewards’ instructions. Choose footwear suitable for grass, check the weather and bring what you need for an outdoor afternoon. Keep children supervised and stay within the designated spectator areas.
For food before or afterwards, see our restaurant guide. For transport, use local taxi information.
Understand what you are watching
The teams
Outdoor polo has four players on each team. The aim is to send the ball between the opposing goalposts. The play changes direction quickly, so watch the ball and the shape of the teams rather than only the nearest rider.
Chukkas and ponies
A match is divided into periods called chukkas. Players change horses during the match; the horses are commonly called polo ponies. The fixture or announcer can explain the format being played.
Handicap
Players have handicap ratings expressed in goals. A tournament’s handicap band describes the level of the teams; it is not a prediction of the final score.
Following the action
Teams change ends after goals in outdoor polo. Pauses and penalties are part of the match, so the scoreboard and commentary are useful for a first visit.
Learn to play
Contact an academy or club with your riding experience, age, available dates and whether you want a one-off introduction or regular tuition. Ask who teaches the session, what equipment is provided and what riding standard is expected.
Do not book a polo lesson as a substitute for checking your suitability with the instructor. If you want general riding lessons first, use the horse-riding section of our sports guide.
Dates, seasons and evening events
Sotogrande’s summer polo season is well established, but match schedules and hospitality change between editions. Use the club or tournament organiser for the current programme. This page does not publish unconfirmed future fixtures or treat an old summer calendar as upcoming.
After-polo parties and other social events require their own checks. Confirm the venue, age policy, ticket and return transport separately from the sporting fixture.
Vos questions répondues
Can I watch polo without knowing the sport?
Yes. Read the short introduction above, arrive in time to find the spectator area and follow the scoreboard or commentary. You do not need to understand every rule to enjoy a first match.
Is entry always free?
No blanket promise is made here. Admission can vary by event, day and hospitality area. Check the organiser’s current information.
Which club hosts the tournament I want to see?
Use the named organiser and ground on the fixture. Ayala, Los Pinos and other venues should not be treated as interchangeable destinations.
Are there matches every day?
Do not assume so. Ask for the dated fixture and check for changes before travelling.
Is the summer tournament still happening in October?
Summer fixtures should not be treated as current in October. Contact the clubs for any later event or practice that visitors may attend.
Can children come?
Ask about the event’s family access and facilities. Keep children supervised and away from horse areas and field boundaries as directed.
What should I wear?
Choose comfortable clothing for the conditions and shoes that work on grass. Hospitality or evening events may specify a separate dress code.
Puis-je emmener un chien ?
Check the event policy in advance. Do not assume pets are allowed because the venue is outdoors.
Can I go into the stables?
Only with permission. Stable areas and horse movements are managed working spaces, not general spectator areas.
Can beginners book a polo lesson?
Ask the academy about its introductory offer and required riding experience. The instructor should confirm suitability and the format before you pay.
Do I need my own horse?
Ask what the lesson or programme includes. Horse hire, equipment and any membership conditions must be confirmed with the provider.
What happens in bad weather?
Check the organiser’s cancellation or postponement notice and your ticket terms. A general forecast does not confirm whether the ground is playable.
Is polo the same as show jumping or dressage?
No. They are different equestrian disciplines. Specify the activity when contacting a centre that offers several types of riding.
Where can I arrange help with a visit?
Utilisation Concierge de Sotogrande for a request, with your date, group size and preferred experience. Availability requires confirmation.
Club contacts checked on 13 October 2026 against official club pages and San Roque tourism. Basic sport information: Hurlingham Polo Association. No live fixture or ticket availability is implied.
